Shugar Market: All-You-Can-Drink Fruit Liqueurs

August 2024 Update: Sadly, Shugar Market Shibuya and Shugar Market Shinjuku are both permanently closed but, another similar option is Sake Market with all-you-can-drink sake (up to 5 hr. time limit). Tickets can be found on Klook starting at $36.99 CAD.

Near to Shibuya Station in Tokyo, a delightful little bar exists that offers all-you-can-drink sake, umeshu (plum wine) and fruit wines. Shugar Market has nearly 100 different sake, fruit and plum wines from all across Japan. You pay an entrance fee (about 3,000 yen), get a stamp, and receive your glass. You’re brought to your seats and are free to browse and self-serve from a long wall of refrigerated bottles of fruit wine. Flavours range from typical fruit flavors like strawberry, lemon, kiwi, peach, pear, mango to more exotic varieties such as persimmon, chestnuts and even kabocha (Japanese squash)!

What was very neat about the place was you could bring your own food to snack on while you drink. There was also a cocktail station where you can mix your liqueur with milk, soy, tea, water, jelly, fruit, etc… and even a sundae station where you could get a few scoops of icecream to go along with your fruit liqueur. This was such a delightful way to spend an evening and a wonderful place to indulge in so many different kinds of sake and fruit wines at a leisurely pace. The next time we are in Tokyo, we will be visiting again and will be bringing our own snacks, likely from a nearby department store!
