The Best Icelandic Snacks for a Campervan Trip

When you go on a road-trip in a foreign country, van snacks are a MUST. Therefore, each time we found ourselves in a grocery store, we would scour the shelves to seek out the best snacks for the road!

Best Snacks for An Icelandic Road Trip:

Harðfiskur: A type of dried fish that is a very popular snack in Iceland. It is usually made from cod or haddock and has a strong, fishy taste. Its smell and taste may not be for everyone but we love it. We were told it is best eaten with a dab of butter, and like many other strong-tasting regional foods (Vegemite, I’m looking at you), of course everything’s better with butter.

Skyr: A thick, creamy dairy product that is similar to yogurt. It is often flavored with fruit or honey and is a popular snack or breakfast food in Iceland. We had this on hand in our campervan and with some fruit and granola, makes for an excellent quick snack.

Djúpur: A type of chocolate-coated ball that is filled with licorice; there are many variations but the one we like best is chocolate, with licorice insides, covered in a licorice powder. These are slightly salted, so you can’t eat too many in one go, but they are the perfect driving snack!

Draumur: "Draumur" is a popular Icelandic chocolate bar that has been around since the 1920s. The name "Draumur" means "dream" in Icelandic, and the chocolate bar is often described as a dreamy, creamy treat. The chocolate bar consists of a thick layer of nougat that is covered in milk chocolate.

Opal: One of the most popular Icelandic licorice candies is called "opál," which is a small, hard candy that is flavored with a combination of licorice and ammonium chloride, giving it a strong and distinctive taste.

Brennivín: Is a digestif considered a treat?? If it is, brennivín or, traditional Icelandic schnapps, with its sweet, caraway flavor, makes the list! It’s a nice after-meal drink that keeps you warm on a cold day.

COLLAB: This is a popular sugar-free energy drink that has added collagen and caffeine. We lived on this stuff on our campervan trip and it comes in so many fun flavours - passion fruit & lime, lime & elderflower, yuzu lime & lemon, etc…that we had to try them all!
