Unearthing Phnom Penh’s Hidden Bars

In the mesmerizing city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the nightlife scene is a kaleidoscope of surprises and as the sun sets, some of the coolest hidden gem bars can be found tucked away in winding alleyways across the city. Finding some of these bars can be a challenge, from navigating back alleys to hidden stairwells, but I can tell you, the search is well worth it!

1. Sundown Social Club: Where the Party Begins

Sundown Social Club is found within the Russian Tuol Tompoung Market where you will be treated to an incredible city-wide vista perched at the bar overlooking the market below. Look out for a faint blue arrow painted on a wall, navigate between buildings and up a set of narrow stairs to find yourself at this vibrant roof-top bar. Getting to this spot is an adventure in itself. Once you’re here, soak up the spectacular views as the sun sets on the city of Phnom Penh.

2. Long After Dark: For Whiskey Lovers

A classy establishment, this speakeasy takes you back to old-school cocktail bar vibes where you can relax at a slower place and be treated to a cocktail or one of the many whiskey options available. Also located near the Russian Market, this bar specializes in whiskey and we had a chance to sample an amazing Japanese whiskey flight here. The bartenders are fantastic and if you’re not into whiskey, they have a delightful selection of signature cocktails to fit every discerning palate.

3. Welsh Embassy: A Tiny Bar with a Big Personality

The Welsh Embassy is a tiny, offbeat bar that packs a party in a cosy space. It’s one of the smallest bars in town and located at the end of an alley in Bassac Lane. The laid-back ambiance invites you to kickback with a cheap beer and the intimate space means you’ll be striking up conversations with strangers in no time. We found the bartenders to be the friendliest in the city and if you go at the right time, you’ll most likely find a party raging upstairs.

4. BattBong Speakeasy: Find it if you can

Finally, BattBong - truly the definition of a hidden speakeasy. Trying to navigate to this bar was a challenge even with Google Maps but after walking through a maze of alleyways, we found it - hidden behind a unique entrance. What can we say? If you’d like to come inside, grab a can of Coke! Within the speakeasy, you’ll find a classy, warm oasis of tapas-style food, beautifully crafted cocktails, and live music. BattBong truly fits the definition of a hidden speakeasy in the middle of Phnom Penh!
